Maths

Welcome to the Year 6 maths page.

Every week I will give details of the maths that has been taught in class. To help children and parents at home, I will usually give examples or add diagrams. 

Please don't hesitate to write questions in your child's planner or call into school if you have any queries at all.

W/B 3.1.18

This week we have already looked at statistics and decimal addition during our Morning Challenges. Year 6 have also amazed me with their arithmetic skills in our first arithmetic test of 2018! Well done everyone.

Autumn 2 Week 5 - Times Tables Rockstars Homework

Every Friday the children in Year 6 are set TT Rockstars homework. They have a week to complete this. The children know how to access the homework with their TT Rockstars login.

Autumn 2 Week 5  w/b 27.11.17

Year 6 have worked very hard this week with their work on 'Reflection'. We have reflected shapes in the x-axis, y-axis and also across a diagonal line. I am very impressed with you all!

Autumn 2 Week 4 w/b 20.11.17

Our maths focus this week has been 'coordinates'.

We have been very busy and looked at many aspects:

 - using and interpreting coordinates

 - plotting coordinates in all 4 quadrants of a coordinate grid

 - identifying missing coordinates

 - translating shapes within a 4 quadrant grid

 

Autumn 2 Week 3 w/b 13.11.17

Year 6 have worked hard with maths this week. Working through 'rounding' problems.

 

Rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000.

 

On Friday, Year 6 also solved conversion problems using miles and kilometres.

Autumn 2 Week 2 w/b 6.11.17

This week we have looked at short and long methods of division, we have used the traditional written method.

 

Below, is the long division method that we use. If you get chance, please ask your child to coach you through this!

Autumn 2 Week 1 w/b 30.10.17

This week we have looked at Halloween code breaking - the children really enjoyed using their multiplication and division skills to solve the problems.

We also worked through short and long multiplication problems, using written methods.

 

Autumn 1 Week 5 w/b 2.10.17

This week Year 6 have mainly concentrated on 'Negative numbers in context'. We have looked at where we find negative numbers, around us and solved problems involving temperature.

Year 6 have used number lines to help them with these problems.

 

Autumn 1 week 4 w/b 25.9.17

This week we have seen a huge improvement with our Times Tables Rockstars, with most children now answering all 60 questions in the 3 minute time allowance. The children and staff are thrilled with the improvements that all children have made. Everybody has increased their times tables fluency in only 3 weeks.

Other maths work has included; ordering numbers, arithmetic and creating numbers with 8-digits.

Autumn 1 week 3 w/b 18.9.17

Our focus this week was to read and write numbers up to 10,000,000. The children amazed me with their maths skills. We looked at populations in cities around the world.

We also looked at ordering numbers with up to 8 digits. We remembered certain strategies to help us.

 

 

Autumn 1 wk 2 w/b 11th September

This week we have looked at a few arithmetic problems and Year 6 have shown me how talented they are! We have worked through long multiplication and addition/subtraction problems, remembering the important steps involved.

 

Aut 1 Week 1 - w/b 4th September

Year 6 have settled amazingly well into their new maths work. We have covered many aspects of maths during Morning Challenges: co-ordinates, arithmetic and times tables.

In our other maths sessions, we have looked at partitioning large numbers and examining the value of digits.

e.g.

65346 = 60,000 + 5,000 + 300 + 40 + 6

The value of the 6 is.....sixty thousand

The value of the 3 is.....three hundred
