Maths

Welcome to the Year 6 maths page.

Every week I will give details of the maths that has been taught in class. To help children and parents at home, I will usually give examples or add diagrams. 

Please don't hesitate to write questions in your child's planner or call into school if you have any queries at all.

Autumn 1 Week 5 w/b 2.10.17

This week Year 6 have mainly concentrated on 'Negative numbers in context'. We have looked at where we find negative numbers, around us and solved problems involving temperature.

Year 6 have used number lines to help them with these problems.

 

Autumn 1 week 4 w/b 25.9.17

This week we have seen a huge improvement with our Times Tables Rockstars, with most children now answering all 60 questions in the 3 minute time allowance. The children and staff are thrilled with the improvements that all children have made. Everybody has increased their times tables fluency in only 3 weeks.

Other maths work has included; ordering numbers, arithmetic and creating numbers with 8-digits.

Autumn 1 week 3 w/b 18.9.17

Our focus this week was to read and write numbers up to 10,000,000. The children amazed me with their maths skills. We looked at populations in cities around the world.

We also looked at ordering numbers with up to 8 digits. We remembered certain strategies to help us.

 

 

Autumn 1 wk 2 w/b 11th September

This week we have looked at a few arithmetic problems and Year 6 have shown me how talented they are! We have worked through long multiplication and addition/subtraction problems, remembering the important steps involved.

 

Aut 1 Week 1 - w/b 4th September

Year 6 have settled amazingly well into their new maths work. We have covered many aspects of maths during Morning Challenges: co-ordinates, arithmetic and times tables.

In our other maths sessions, we have looked at partitioning large numbers and examining the value of digits.

e.g.

65346 = 60,000 + 5,000 + 300 + 40 + 6

The value of the 6 is.....sixty thousand

The value of the 3 is.....three hundred
